Romford East London
By Paul Harley
History Facts of Romford East London Romford is a large suburban town in East London, and the principal town of the London Borough of Havering. Romford has been a market town since 1247, and it holds the exclusive right to hold markets over an area of "six and two thirds miles" centred on Romford, settled in mediƦval times when King Henry III granted the town a Market Charter for livestock. Today the market continues to thrive and is considered to be one of the largest and best street markets in the South East. Romford Market is open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, offering 300 stalls on over 600 pitches. Romford shopping centre grew up around the original marketplace, on the line of the old Roman road from London to Colchester. The Liberty Shopping Centre has recently been expanded and modernised by the Romford revival programme. The centre now has two shopping centres, The Liberty and Liberty 2, which together provide 135 retail units, including many of the big High Street names. The town has always been associated with a ford over a small stream which flows through it, now known as the River Rom. Romford Brewery started in South Street at the end of the 18th century and while the brewery itself closed in 1993, remains of the building can still be seen on the High Street. Famous residents include Colonel Blood, who plotted to steal the crown jewels, and once ran an apothecary's shop in Romford Market. Romford is home to the Romford Raiders ice hockey team, and there is greyhound racing at Romford Greyhound Stadium. Famed for its vibrant atmosphere, this 4,300 capacity venue is the ideal place to have a night out and has 3 great restaurants. Romford is now the New home of Scenic Getaway Motorhome Hire as well as the Romford UK champion marching band, The Royal British Legion Band & Corps of Drums Romford. |
